This is my story of Volunteering in Rescue Services. I had done many jobs including acting & documentaries. As a volunteer you get free training, attain knowledge, self esteem, practical experience & all it costs is a little of your time.

The reward is that when things look tough or hopeless you are the one comes along giving help. It’s about making a difference. It’s about the joy you get from helping some one else in need.

I joined the VRA (Volunteer Rescue Association), was trained as boat master of VRA vessel ‘Spirit of Brooklyn’ which was formerly a Hong Kong Police Boat. I am also member of the CFU (Community Fire Unit) under NSW Fire Services. With all uniforms & equipment supplied by the Government as well; regular trainings, community events, BBQ, etc. its really a wonderful feeling to belong.

Yes, fire can be dangerous & destructive but what would you rather be if being confronted by a fire ?

Confused, unskilled as to your options of what to do? If you are trained, you can help others or yourself in protecting properties, saving life & injuries.

Back in the 1990s there was a huge fire in North Shore & I helped my father save his house from burning down. It was an awful experience but we saved the house. I hope to never see another major fire. In a disaster, I rather be an active participant face up to the challenge & not a frightened man. Better I was a help, not a liability.

Life is climbing a mountain, it’s hard work, sometimes easy, fun but can be very difficult but you get there where you take in the beautiful view survey where you came from consider what next.
